Project overview

As part of the Dyrdee team, we developed the idea for the Festival of Animation Berlin 2026 Open Call - with a horror theme! From the idea I created the storyboard (keeping in mind all possible formats), iterated the character designs and produced the illustrations. The backgrounds were in the end taken from my 2D illustrations and, by a colleague, transformed into beautiful 3D scenes. All this came together in the animation and a beautifully supporting sound design.

Challenge

The challenge was to design something fitting Berlin, a city with a lot of character, then including the horror theme, but both without falling into tiring clichés. We wanted something fun and surprising, that speaks to anyone that has taken public transport in Berlin before. I designed the characters to be not just stereotypical monsters but also characters you wouldn't be too surprised to see on a train in Berlin.

Outcome

In the end we have this super fun mix of the Berlin and horror theme, lighthearted humour and horror and some horror tropes remade. Stylistically we represent this mix as well, mixing 2D vector characters, hand drawn frame by frame effects and 3D backgrounds.
